24 Hour Horse Ride Helps Build Classrooms
To raise money to build classrooms for 200 children we organised a 24 hour non-stop horse ride.
By law a driver and vehicle were needed in front and behind my horse and myself for the whole 24 hours. Twelve volunteers were needed to do
4 hour shifts.
During the ride we encountered a small hiccup: at 2 a.m. on Sunday morning the lights disappeared from behind me. I decided that I must
carry on - the job had to be done. Some 30 minutes later the lights were back. The police had stopped my rear escort as they were checking complaints of horse rustling. The local people of the area we were riding
through had heard horse hoofs and, being suspicious, had rung the police. Alas it was only me fighting to keep sain and complete this ride for the children in The Gambia.
I did it and a grand sum of £4,000 was raised from local people in the Gloucester area.
New Year Disco
We organised a New Year Disco - what a turn out! It raised around £2,000.
Other Help
Many more events helped to raise the remainder of the money to build and furnish the classrooms.
All the learning materials were donated by schools, companies and ‘loft tidies’. And we won’t forget the people who gave me badly needed
storage space.
